The Maastricht University Medical Hospital (AZM) is playing an important role in a new TV series on Dutch television called ‘The University Hospital’, in which innovative treatment and surgical techniques and research methods are dealt with. The film production company SNP Media has been to the hospital to do interviews over the past several weeks.
They talked to Dr. Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt, who is concerned with human biology and, last year, published about the phenomenon known as ‘brown fat’, a unique form of fatty tissue that, rather than storing excess energy actually burns it. This could lead to a solution to problems of excess weight. It was discovered by accident in scanning cancer patients.
Pulmonary diseases in children is a specialty of Dr. Edward Dompeling, who has developed a way of making an early diagnosis of bronchial inflammation using condensation, whereby a long cooling tube is used to capture the exhaled air in a bag at the bottom of the tube and then run it through the cooling tube again and condense it. Only a tiny amount is needed to yield the large number of particles. Another advantage is that very young children only need to breath into the device for a few minutes. This examination can be repeated often because it doesn’t harm the patient and helps in the early detection of asthma.
Clinical genetics is another subject that the production team were interested in.
