At the university campus in Diepenbeek in Belgian Limburg, the Flemish minister of innovation, Ingrid Lieten, has officially opened BioVille. This is a start-up facility with the required infrastructure for life-science companies from the university and elsewhere. Currently there are eight companies are operating from the center. BioVille is the third incubator for new business and is the brainchild of Professor Piet Stinissen of the University of Hasselt.
It is a physical meeting place for the life-science community and provides good opportunities for cross-fertilization between education, research and knowledge-intensive companies. It’s an eco-system at the heart of Meuse-Rhine for one of the most productive business clusters.
Bioville was built in a mere eight months by the Life Sciences Development Campus, founded by LRM, the Limburg development company, with EUR 5.5m support from the EU and Flanders. The 2,000m2 building is virtually complete and the eight companies represent EUR 20m. In the Fall, a decision will be taken on an expansion of some 15,000m2.
