The Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC) has developed a unique concept to facilitate the development of innovative products and services dedicated to an optimal clinical application, the Medical Field Lab. The Medical Field Lab organisation, is the single point of contact for both public and private initiatives regarding the development of concept to market. Any idea, problem or need is screened by a multidisciplinary team, after which a flyer of high potential ideas are disseminated throughout a worldwide network of companies, engineers, researchers and physicians. The consortium of interested parties is assembled in a secure ‘meet & greet’ setting where agreements are made, as a prerequisite for a free exchange of ideas. Innovation scenarios are created through guided brainstorm sessions, which lead up to the eventual project plan. A tailor made public-private funding arrangement, forms the financial basis for putting the plan into practice. Depending on the nature and developmental stage, R&D projects are complaisantly supported with rapid prototyping, clinical validation and certification. A range of comprehensive services can be ‘à la carte’ provided, such as facility sharing, financial control, business development and commercialization expertise. According to the Medical Field Lab concept, our hospital is an open house workshop where companies, consumers, engineers, researchers and physicians work together on life sciences R&D. The Medical Field Lab can expand your hospital’s life sciences innovation productivity, by either collaboration (be a network member) or consultancy to help you to evolve this organizational mind set and management.
